For the past 35 years our organization has been the pillar of prevention education in our community, pioneering the implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies in our community. We are the trusted source for prevention and treatment, providing essential knowledge and resources to care providers, key leaders and educators by adhering to the latest scientific protocols. Communities That Care is an evidence-based process focused on developing a community-wide system for prevention through collaboration with key leaders and community members. The goal is to improve the lives of youth and families by addressing common adolescent problem behaviors including substance use, delinquency, school dropout, violence, teen pregnancy, and depression and anxiety. The risk factors for these problem behaviors are addressed in four areas: community, family, school, and individual. Communities That Care pulls all those wonderful people and resources together to prioritize the primary risk factor effecting our youth in Indian River County.
Annually, our staff have been selected to present at state and national conferences, recognized for their outstanding work in Indian River County. They shared their successful strategies as models for other communities. The presentation, "What’s The Point? Overcoming Barriers in the Fight Against Vaping through Community Collaboration," showcased our efforts to address vaping and related challenges through partnerships. Another presentation, "Prevention Synergy: How Providers and Coalitions Work Together to Create Change," engaged participants in a synergy activity to demonstrate how each individual contributes to a larger collaborative effort.dian River County. The groups focus on volunteering and organizing events to improve their schools and community. This year, clubs were active at Boys & Girls Club Vero Beach, Sebastian, and Fellsmere, Indian River Charter High School, and Storm Grove Middle School.
Substance Awareness Center (SAC) is accredited by CARF International for its Day Treatment, Outpatient Treatment, and Prevention programs. CARF acknowledged the Substance Awareness Center’s exemplary conformance to the prevention standards through their outstanding results and innovative benefits to the field. This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be given to an organization. This means that SAC has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit its commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality.
In CARF’s Accreditation Report, it stated that SAC demonstrated substantial conformance to the standards, and continues to identify alignment between community needs and organization strengths. CARF also stated that, the organizations leadership and staff members are respected in the community and regarded as extremely responsive and participatory, and that our school-based prevention program is recognized in the community as providing high-quality services to a vulnerable population.
Leadership has shown a commitment to improving operations for the benefit of clients through careful performance improvement plans that strengthen outcomes for clients and demonstrate quality improvement and ongoing conformance to the CARF standards.
CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and continuous improvement services that center on enhancing the lives of the persons served.

We educate the community on prevention science and the progression of addiction. Our work addresses the risks associated with substance misuse and how to increase protective factors for our youth. Our evidence based process focuses on root causes of substance misuse and problem behaviors through an active prevention coalition. Our goal is to eliminate substance misuse by implementing a data driven community action plan thereby increasing community awareness and reducing youth substance use.

The Thrive Coalition develops, implements, and promotes strategies to reduce youth risk factors and increase protective factors for substance misuse and adolescent problem behaviors. It empowers and mobilizes the community to change the landscape of Indian River County. The Thrive Coaltion is comprised of key stakeholders including law enforcement, government officials, educators, healthcare, youth serving organization, mental health and substance abuse professionals, faith-based leaders, and youth.
Using a data-driven approach, Thrive continually assesses risk and protective factors, as well as substance use trends in the county in order to implement community-level strategies that best address the unique needs of Indian River County.
Thrive works with our community to disseminate awareness campaign messages, to host community events, and to provide community training and advocacy.

Thrive works to help address the overdose crisis through overdose training and Narcan kit dissemination. Narcan Nasal Spray is FDA approved for the treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Designed for use in the community, Narcan Nasal Spray is safe,effective and easy to use. Since most overdoses occur in a home setting, it was developed for first responders, as well as family, friends, and caregivers with no medical training required. Narcan is lifesaving medication and in his report Facing Addiction in America, the Surgeon General called upon all Americans to carry naloxone/Narcan to save lives. Thrive offers free Narcan to anyone in our community who is at risk of an overdose or witnessing an overdose. Please contact our office for your free Narcan Nasal Spray kit.
Aimed at engaging and educating the public through interactive educational experiences. These events include the Overdose Awareness Summit, hosting national prevention speakers, and community interactive learning experiences such as "Hidden in Plain Sight," a mock teen bedroom. This initiative utilizes a mobile trailer designed to look like a teen's bedroom and includes a variety of items that represent hidden risk indicators, such as vape devices, disguised alcohol containers, marijuana, paraphernalia and even hidden messages.
The Annual Freedom 5K Run & Walk raises funds and awareness about substance misuse and prevention, celebrating the freedom that individuals and families achieve through recovery. We encourage participants to reflect on who or what they run for, as everyone seeks freedom from something in their lives.

Strategy information
Our Universal Prevention strategy involves evidence-based prevention programming in schools and at community partner sites. It aims to build the necessary skills to reduce the likelihood of substance use and other health risk behaviors. Programs include Botvin LifeSkills Training, Prevention Plus Wellness (SPORT, Vaping, and Marijuana), and Erika’s Lighthouse.
In addition, we offer prevention programming aimed at our senior population. In collaboration with community partners we implement the evidence based WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education) curriculum which addresses healthy aging and risks for substance misuse, depression, and social isolation.

We provide effective, person-centered early intervention and adolescent treatment services, fostering hope and healing. Evidence based early intervention strategies are proven effective and are lifesaving. We uphold the highest standards of care, combating the stigma that non-profit services lack quality. As the only agency in the area following the latest evidence-based prevention protocols, we are accredited and offer a continuum of care for youth. We continuously measure and evaluate our program outcomes to ensure we are meeting fidelity.
Strategy information
Early intervention and adolescent treatment focuses on the specific needs of each youth and their family. It serves youth engaged in risky behavior, often identified and referred by law enforcement, the juvenile justice system, or schools. The program uses evidence based interventions to reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors through individual, group, and family sessions.
Adolescent treatment provides clinical interventions designed to meet the needs of youth with substance use and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Services include individual, group, and family counseling, substance abuse education, healthy coping skills, trauma resolution, and motivational enhancement strategies to achieve and maintain a substance free lifestyle.

We are committed to serving our community and sharing the hope, healing, and possibilities that come with recovery from substance use disorders. Approximately 1 in 6 Americans have a substance use disorder, but only 6% access the specialty treatment they need.
Strategy information
Our Day Treatment program serves adults with substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. It is a highly structured clinical level of care offering over 16 hours per week of therapeutic services including individual, group, family, and peer support services. It also offers experiential therapies like meditation and acupuncture, with treatment lasting about 3-4 months, tailored to each individual.
Designed for adults with mild/moderate substance use and co-occurring conditions, our outpatient level of care offers more flexibility than day treatment. The schedule and delivery of clinical services are designed to meet individual needs. Both day treatment and outpatient are offered on sliding fee scale. Reduced reimbursement rates could impact service availability highlighting the need for additional funding.
Our recovery homes provide a structured, supportive, sober living environment to help adults with substance use disorders transition into long-term recovery. Residents follow a phased approach focused on self-awareness, job readiness, and independence. Our team of licensed clinicians and certified peer support specialists provides comprehensive support to ensure lifelong recovery.
Medications for Substance Use Disorders combines FDA-approved medications combined with comprehensive counseling, effectively treats opioid and alcohol use disorders. Partnering with Treasure Coast Community Health, we offer these medications alongside the comprehensive counseling at no cost to those without insurance. This is a vital component of our commitment to making certain recovery accessible to all.
Our peer support specialists are trained and certified to bring lived experience to the recovery process, effectively building trust and engagement. Peer support specialists extend outreach to vulnerable populations at the Indian River County Jail and other community partner sites. These services are offered at no cost, ensuring access for all. They provide assertive outreach and recovery support, to help those who struggle enter and remain in recovery. For those who receive services at Thrive our peers are the first face of the organization. Their work is embedded throughout our recovery programs and our community outreach.
Thrive recognizes the profound impact of substance use disorders on families and friends. The CRAFT approach is an evidence based system for helping friends and family members who are of adult age to change the way that they are interact with a loved one who has a substance use problem.
Research on CRAFT shows that about 70% of families who receive CRAFT are able to get their loved ones into treatment within a year (Miller, Meyers, & Tonigan, 1999). CRAFT also helps family members improve their own lives, whether their loved one ends up seeking treatment or not.
CRAFT teaches how to break unintentional participation in patterns related to their loved ones use. You will learn how to stop your engagement in these patterns in ways that keep you safe, set appropriate boundaries, and are consistent with the type of person you want to be.
CRAFT is about learning skills to improve your relationship with yourself and with your loved one. learn practical skills to help one disengage loved ones use. You will also learn ways to take back your life from your loved ones addiction and to reconnect with the things that are important to you. CRAFT gives you the skills to invite changes in your loved one and make changes in your own lives.
CRAFT can be done one-on-one with a provider or in a group of other family members. Thrive offers CRAFT at no cost and is open to anyone in the community.
